Olympic Village, Italy
Milan’s Southern District is undergoing a major urban transformation to host the new Olympic Village for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. Located in the strategic Porta Romana area, the development is part of a broader regeneration initiative converting former railway yards into a vibrant mixed-use district that will serve as a legacy infrastructure for the city beyond the Games.
FACES Engineering has been appointed to provide facade engineering and facade access consultancy for this landmark project. The Olympic Village represents a significant addition to Milan’s evolving skyline and urban fabric, combining residential accommodation for athletes with sustainable design principles and future adaptability for post-Olympic use.
The project is being developed by Coima and Covivio, two leading real estate developers, with architectural design by SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill), an internationally renowned practice known for delivering complex, high-performance buildings worldwide. This collaboration brings together expertise in large-scale urban development, innovative design, and advanced engineering to create a project of exceptional technical and architectural quality.
FACES’ involvement focuses on the engineering and coordination of the building envelope systems, ensuring that the facade design meets the demanding performance requirements for thermal efficiency, acoustic comfort, and structural integrity while maintaining architectural intent. The facade access strategy addresses the specific needs of maintenance and lifecycle management for a development of this scale and complexity.
The Olympic Village project exemplifies how major sporting events can catalyze urban regeneration, delivering infrastructure that serves both immediate Olympic requirements and long-term community needs. The technical solutions developed for this project demonstrate FACES’ capability to work on complex, high-profile developments alongside leading international architectural practices.
