Libeskind Tower IL CURVO, Italy
Libeskind Tower, also known as Il Curvo (The Curved One), is located in CityLife’s Piazza Tre Torri between the Straight One (Torre Isozaki) and the Twisted One (Torre Hadid), completing one of Milan’s most iconic architectural ensembles. The tower is characterized by a rising concave shape which reaches 175 meters, standing as the third and final piece of the CityLife masterplan’s high-rise development.
The tower has been created in line with state-of-the-art building and environmental sustainability criteria, achieving LEED Gold certification and making it one of the most recognizable buildings of the new Milan skyline. The glazing façade, curved inwards, reflects the public space below and engages in architectural dialogue with its counterparts, creating a unified yet diverse urban landmark.
FACES Engineering was involved in the engineering development of this technically complex project. The curved geometry presents significant engineering challenges, with the building’s distinctive concave form requiring sophisticated coordination between structural systems and envelope performance.
The Renaissance cupola is the basic principle behind Il Curvo’s concept. It is reinterpreted through the concave movement of its elevation and culminates in the crown, both distinctive elements of the project. This 40-meter-tall structure not only houses the building’s technical systems—including maintenance facilities, air conditioning, and rainwater recycling—but also functions as a viewing platform and art gallery, becoming an architectural statement in itself.
The ground floor is composed by a triple-height entrance hall, accessible from the CityLife Shopping District, the M5 subway station, and Piazza Tre Torri. The offices occupy floors one through twenty-eight, with the central core providing maximum flexibility of office space to accommodate multiple tenants. The twenty-seventh floor hosts an impressive double-height conference hall, creating a prestigious environment for corporate gatherings.
Designed by Studio Daniel Libeskind in collaboration with Italian practice SBGA | Blengini Ghirardelli, the tower demonstrates how architectural ambition can be realized through advanced engineering. The curvature is achieved through columns that change inclination at every floor level, while stability is guaranteed by a central reinforced concrete core. This structural solution, combined with the sophisticated façade system, required precise coordination to translate the architectural vision into a buildable reality.
Sustainability is addressed through targeted interventions including photovoltaic panels integrated into the crown structure, advanced building management systems, and high-performance glazing that optimizes thermal and visual comfort while minimizing energy demand. The project confirms how complex geometries and environmental performance can coexist when supported by rigorous engineering design.
The tower, which serves as the Milan headquarters for PricewaterhouseCoopers, demonstrates FACES’ capability to contribute to landmark projects that define contemporary urban skylines through the integration of architectural expression and technical precision.
