City Wave, Italy
City Wave is a 53,500 square meter mixed-use development combining workspaces and public amenities within a highly integrated architectural and engineering concept.
The project consists of two distinct buildings connected by a 140-meter-long suspended roof structure. This lightweight canopy forms a contemporary “portico”, supported by slender columns working in tension to counteract uplift forces, translating structural efficiency into a defining architectural element.
The canopy functions as a reversed portico, blurring the boundaries between public and private spaces, as well as between indoor and outdoor environments. Its design enables continuity at ground level while providing shelter and spatial cohesion across the site.
Clad with photovoltaic solar shingles, the roof structure becomes an active energy-generating system and represents one of the largest integrated solar canopies in Europe. This solution combines structural innovation with measurable sustainability performance.
The larger of the two buildings accommodates office functions, while the smaller volume houses a 120-room hotel. Both buildings are organized around internal courtyards designed to maximize daylight penetration and natural ventilation.
The courtyards provide visual connections to the private gardens and play a key environmental role, acting as a filter that moderates solar radiation on the south-facing façades. This passive strategy contributes to improved thermal comfort and reduced energy demand, reinforcing the project’s performance-driven design approach.
